The Minister of Justice, Hon D.A.M. Graham, today announced the appointment of Timothy Charles Brewer as a Law Commissioner.

Mr Brewer is the Crown Solicitor at New Plymouth and a principal in a legal firm. He will continue in these roles during the term of his appointment to the Law Commission.

He graduated LL.B (Hons) (First Class) from Victoria University of Wellington in 1979. He was appointed Crown Solicitor at New Plymouth in 1988.

He has been a Member of the Faculty of the NZ Law Society's litigation skills programme since 1986 and was Director of the programme in 1996.

He is a Member of the NZLS Criminal Law Committee and its consultative group on criminal law.

He is also a Member of the Ministry of Justice criminal justice policy focus group and a Member of the Courts-Martial Panel of Advocates.

Mr Brewer is a Colonel in the NZ Army, currently serving as Assistant Chief of General Staff (Territorial Force).

Mr Brewer's appointment is for three years from 1 October, 1997.

He replaces Mr Les Atkins QC whose appointment expires.
