Ginny Andersen appointed as Minister of Police

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has today appointed Ginny Andersen as Minister of Police.

“Ginny Andersen has a strong and relevant background in this important portfolio,” Chris Hipkins said.

“Ginny Andersen worked for the Police as a non-sworn staff member for around 10 years and has more recently been chair of the Justice Select Committee. She is taking on the role immediately.

Barbara Edmonds will take on Ginny Andersen’s role as Associate Immigration Minister,” Chris Hipkins said.

Notes:

  • Ginny Andersen worked at NZ Police for around a decade, as a non-sworn staff member in the policy team
  • She started as a Senior Advisor and worked her way to become a Policy Manager at Police National Headquarters
  • During this time she was a strategic advisor on Māori, Pacific and Ethnic services with a focus on reducing Māori offending
  • As a Policy Manager, her two main areas of work were methamphetamine and organised crime.
  • Ginny Andersen was also seconded into the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet during the Key administration to work on the Tackling Methamphetamine Action Plan
