Civil Defence, Youth and Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye will travel to Japan tomorrow, to represent the government at the 2015 Nikkei Forum and the seventh Pacific Alliance Leaders Meeting (PALM).

“The Nikkei Forum is a high-level annual meeting hosted by Nikkei Inc, Japan’s largest media group,” says Ms Kaye.

“The forum brings together political leaders and top business executives from Asia to discuss the outlook for the region, and the impact of developments in Asia for the global economy.

The Minister of Civil Defence, Nikki Kaye, has thanked communities and agencies in the Wellington and Bay of Plenty regions for the way they’ve responded to flooding, landslides and a tornado.

The Wellington region, including the Kapiti Coast and Hutt Valley, received torrential rain for much of yesterday, and last night a tornado struck Mount Maunganui.

“The Wellington region in particular faced significant disruption, and it was heart-warming to see how people reached out to support each other, for example by opening their homes to stranded commuters.

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye today launched New Zealand ShakeOut 2015, a six month campaign leading up to a national earthquake drill at 9.15am on 15 October 2015.

“Today I launched ShakeOut at Thorndon School in Wellington, because schools led the way during the last drill, with over half a million students and teachers taking part.

“However, we need not only schools but as many other organisations as possible involved, such as community groups, shops and businesses.

GeoNet recorded a 6.2 earthquake located 35km south-east of St Arnaud, at a depth of 52km, just after 3.30pm today.

“The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) is making contact with a number of local authorities, as the earthquake was felt in various parts of New Zealand, to determine if there have been any injuries or damage,” says Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye.

“At this stage, I am advised that MCDEM hasn’t received any reports of major injuries or damage.

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye says Cyclone Pam highlighted potential improvements that could be made to strengthen the Chatham Islands’ resilience against future emergencies.

“I visited the Chatham Islands yesterday and witnessed both the damage caused by the recent severe weather, as well as the spirit of the community that rallied to respond to the emergency.

“In small communities we often see the best of New Zealand, and there were many examples of local people stepping up to help out.

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye has thanked everyone involved in preparing for and responding to the effects of Cyclone Pam in New Zealand.

“As well as civil defence groups, council staff, emergency services and other professionals, I recognise that many volunteers have also given their time.

“Whether it’s been ringing around phone trees to make sure the community was prepared, or cleaning up debris afterwards, your efforts are appreciated.

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye says communities in the northeast of the North Island from Cape Reinga to Hawkes Bay, and outer islands such as the Chatham Islands, should make sure they’re prepared for the possible impact of Cyclone Pam.

“I’ve been advised that New Zealand is not in the cyclone’s direct path, but we’re still likely to experience severe weather in affected areas as it passes by.

“Other areas may also experience effects such as increased sea swells.

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye tonight presented awards to a number of people who have made significant contributions to civil defence emergency management in New Zealand.


“Tonight we recognised people who have been on the ground and in the thick of the action, as emergencies unfolded around them,” says Ms Kaye.


“We also recognised people who have worked tirelessly and passionately to build and improve local civil defence systems and processes.



With many of us finishing our summer break and gearing up for the new work and school year, now’s the time to check that we’re prepared for an emergency, says Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye.

“The start of the year provides a great opportunity to sit down and develop your household emergency plan.

“Learn about the hazards in your area, figure out where you’ll meet if you can’t get home, decide who your emergency contacts will be and check what supplies you will need.”

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye welcomes the appointment of Sarah Stuart-Black, the new Director at the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM).

“The appointment was made by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, in consultation with me about the requirements of the role.”

“Sarah has strong national and international experience, and a broad understanding of managing emergencies, as well as building and maintaining systems to prepare for, respond to and recover from them.”
