Keeping New Zealand safe
- Almost $9 million in new funding to Customs for the 2003-04 year and between $15 and $25 million, subject to a commercial tender process, for new x-ray technology.
- $1.069 million next year and $844,000 a year thereafter for transport initiatives, including implementation of the new international maritime security measures
- $19.82 million over four years to better manage immigration risks.
- Biosecurity package: $2.46 million over four years for aircraft, passenger and mail clearance; $2.3 million next year and $2.5 million for the following two years for exotic disease response capability; $117,000 for reference laboratories and $1.2 million for surveillance.
- $6.6 million over four years to fund two police methamphetamine lab clean-up teams.
- 50 new police and a specialist mobile DNA squad for Auckland.
Announced pre-budget
- $41.5 million over four years to strengthen the probation service.
- $2 million increase over the next four years to improve regionally-based assistance to crime victims.
- $19 million a year for the next four years to raise regular force pay.
- $1.9 million increase for Customs Service drug surveillance.
- $6 million in 2003-04 and $1.9 million a year thereafter to improve the security of New Zealand consular, diplomatic and other staff overseas.
- An additional $20 million a year for overseas aid, half to go to Iraq.
