Promoting and protecting our environment, culture and heritage

Culture and heritage
  • Almost $40 million over four years to support Television New Zealand, Radio New Zealand, New Zealand on Air and the Broadcasting Standards Authority. [$14.6 million to RNZ already announced.]
  • $1 million over four years for iwi radio.
  • $6.5 million for an information programme on the Treaty of Waitangi and a further $5.9 million over the next four years for the Treaty settlement process.
  • $34 million in 2003-04 to lift participation in sport, and another $11 million for additional sports coordinators in secondary schools.
Environment
  • $2 million over the next two years to improve water management.
Announced pre-budget Environment
  • An additional $1.3 million to EnergyWise Home Grants to insulate the homes of low income families.
  • $200,000 to the Solar Hot Water Grants scheme.
  • Increase from $1 million a year to $2 million for the Crown Energy Efficiency Loan Scheme.
  • $1.2 million over two years for a public information campaign on low sulphur diesel.
  • $2 million a year for four years from next year for the Renewable Energy Market Development Fund.
Culture and heritage
  • Radio New Zealand funding increase: $14.6 million over four years.
  • Creative New Zealand: $11.6 million over four years.
  • Royal New Zealand Ballet: $2 million over four years.
  • $15.2 million over four years to establish a Heritage Preservation Fund and increase funding to the Historic Places Trust, the Department of Conservation and the
Antarctic Heritage Trust.
  • $3.5 million to build a new field store at Scott Base.
